Why do Vetting Requests take so long

Oliver made this Official Information request to New Zealand Police

The request was successful.

From: Oliver

Dear New Zealand Police,

I am currently employed as a Youth Officer for my local district council and am responsible for the safety and protection of children and young persons when participating in youth activities after school and during school holidays.

This responsibility includes ensuring that my volunteers are all appropriately vetted.

It has been my experience so far that the vetting application, once submitted, takes up to four weeks or longer to come back.

I am officially requesting that you release to me the reason why this takes so long. Why in the 21st century, with all our ability to archive and collate and consolidate data with our current technology, is it still taking weeks to find out if someone has ever committed a crime in the last 7 years or a crime ever against children or young persons?

Also, is there a way that vetting requests can be fast tracked?

Yours faithfully,

Oliver
