Dear Mr Johnston,

Request

You have requested New Zealand Post Limited to provide the number of
parcels that it has intercepted and/or referred to the New Zealand Police
where the package has contained, or suspected to have contained, illegal
drugs. You have asked for a breakdown for the years 2011 to 2016. You have
also asked New Zealand Post to, if possible, provide a breakdown by drug
type.

Response

Set out below is a table showing the total number of items that have been
detained by New Zealand Post due to the item containing, or New Zealand
Post suspecting that the item contains, illegal drugs. The table provides
a breakdown of the items by year and by drug type (Cannabis,
Methamphetamine and Other).

Year Cannabis Meth Other Total
2011 25 2 2 29
2012 35 2 6 43
2013 19 2 21
2014 29 1 2 32
2015 31 1 3 35
2016 19 6 25
158 6 21 185

177 of the 185 items recorded above were handed over to New Zealand
Police. The remaining 8 items were found, following inspection by New
Zealand Post, not to contain illegal drugs.

Please note that the above table only records items that New Zealand Post
is aware of via its postal mail operation. The table does not include
details of parcels which were carried and/or opened by CourierPost as part
of New Zealand Post’s separate parcel delivery/courier operation. That
detail is not recorded by New Zealand Post.

Kind regards,

OIA Officer

New Zealand Post
