Dear Rex,
Thank you for your request to Hon Dr Nick Smith, Minister for Building and Construction, below. Your request has been placed before the Minister for his consideration. Your request was received in this office on 20 December 2016 and will be responded to under the provisions of the Official Information Act.
You have requested information on the number of houses built in Auckland in the last two years, social, private and government.
I have considered your request and, under section 14(b)(i) and (ii) of the Official Information Act, decided to transfer part of your request regarding social and government houses to Hon Amy Adams, Minister of Social Housing, for response.
Information regarding private houses, if any, will be provided by this office.
Please note that due to the holiday period, the 20 working day timeframe will be due on 8 February 2017.
Kind regards,
Joe

Dear Joe Harbridge,
With respect, housing consents ARE NOT BUILT HOUSES. Please do not give me any more flim-flam about how close the consents given correlate to houses built; I'd like the actual number OF HOUSES BUILT. NOT CONSENTS. I hope this is clearer for you to understand as I am not asking about consents. People do not live in consents, do they, Joe?
I also note that my deadline was 8 February 2017. You are two weeks late in your reply yet there is no apology for your tardiness. I find this disappointing that you cannot seem to answer a request correctly within the timeframe, and fail to apologise for such laxity. Could you please answer the question I raised without referring to consents? They are NOT HOUSES, ready to live in.
Yours sincerely,
Rex Landy

Dear Rex,
Further to your email, as stated in the Minister’s response, this office does not hold the information you have requested (i.e. an accurate record of how many private homes have been built in Auckland over the last two years).
As the Minister suggested in his response, you may wish to contact the Auckland Council to see what information it holds on the number of private dwellings completed. Councils issue Code Compliance Certificates for completed homes, so the Council may be able to provide information you are interested in. However, this will not necessarily be an accurate record of how many private homes have been built over the last two years either as it is possible for residences to be occupied for some period, even years, before Code Compliance Certificates are finally issued.
Advice from officials is that over the long run, new dwelling consents are a fairly accurate indicator of additional dwellings in Auckland.
Finally, I would like to apologise for the lateness in the response to your request. We take our obligations under the legislation seriously and endeavour to do our best to respond in the timeframes required.
Kind regards,
Joe

David, call someone who cares. Building consents ARE NOT houses, and I will tell them so.

I think you're being quite rude and unprofessional here.
