Dear J James

I refer to your email of 4 April 2016, in which you made the following
request for information.

I request the following information:

1. The salary range of your highest pay band, and how many men are in it;
2. The salary range of your second highest pay band, and how many men are
in it; 3. The salary range of your third highest pay band, and how many
men are in it; 4. How many male employees you currently have employed at
your institution; 5. The salary range of your highest pay band, and how
many women are in it; 6. The salary range of your second highest pay band,
and how many women are in it; 7. The salary range of your third highest
pay band, and how many women are in it; 8. How many female employees you
currently have employed at your institution.

The University of Auckland does not use pay bands. This may constitute a
refusal of your requests 1-3 and 5-7 on the ground that the University
does not hold the information requested (see s 18(g) of the Official
Information Act).

The information requested in requests 4 and 8 is provided in the tables
below:

Count of ID Reg/Temp
Sex Fixed Term Permanent Grand Total
F 1268 2080 3348
M 986 1740 2726
Grand Total 2254 3820 6074

The following table includes casual staff members. Please note that casual
staff remain on our system as “active” for 12 months following their last
pay transaction – the University is not paying 5976 casual staff in this
pay period.

Count of ID Reg/Temp
Sex Casual Fixed Term Permanent Grand Total
F 3607 1268 2080 6955
M 2369 986 1740 5095
Grand Total 5976 2254 3820 12050

You have the right, under s 28(3) of the Official Information Act, to seek
a review of a refusal to provide requested official information by way of
a complaint to an Ombudsman.

Your sincerely

The response here from the University of Auckland is a little misleading, as the University does use some forms of pay bands, however they differ through the University. e.g. Professional Staff are on separate so-called "Salary Levels" to Academic Staff, and different again to tutors etc.

You may get better information by refining your request to staff on a specific contract. Have a look at the collective contracts here:
http://teu.ac.nz/branches/collective-agr...
Each of these has salary levels in it.
