Dear Ministry of Business, Innovation & Employment,
Section 21 of the Customs and Excise Act 1996 requires craft en route to New Zealand to provide specified information to Customs. The information required is specified in sections 12C and 12D of the Customs and Excise Regulations 1996, and includes personally identifying information on passengers, including their name, date of birth, gender, nationality, travel document information as well as information on their movements. I would like to request the following information under the OIA:
* How long personally identifying information on passengers en route to New Zealand is retained by Customs;
* what precautions Customs uses to protect this personally identifying information from loss, unauthorised access or modification, or other misuse;
* what other agencies it is shared with or disclosed to, and the legal authority for such sharing or disclosure;
* any privacy policy which applies to the collection, storage, use and disclosure of this information.
I would prefer to receive an electronic response. Queries about this request will be automatically forwarded to me by the fyi.org.nz website.
With regards to s12 of the OIA, I am an NZ citizen and in NZ.
