1982 (OIA). The University’s response is set out below under each of your
questions. 

 

“I am requesting information about the MAP.

 

"The Māori Academic Programme (MAP) is designed to strengthen, nurture and
promote the desire for academic excellence in the pursuit of your law
studies.

The University does not hold total budget figures for the Māori
Academic Programme (MAP). The University can, however, provide the
following information about funding allocations from the Tertiary
Education Commission Equity Fund (TECEF):

2. What is the funding source for the additional tutorials/intensives for
MAP? 

The funding source for the additional tutorials and intensives for MAP is
TECEF. For 2026 and 2027, the MAP TECEF allocation is $51,900 per year,
which encompasses funding for tutorials and intensives.

mainstream tutorials." 

3. What is the funding source for the additional workshops for MAP? 

The funding source for additional MAP workshops is also TECEF. The 2026
and 2027 MAP TECEF allocation of $51,900 per year encompasses
tutorials, intensives, and any additional workshops. 

 

4. Is the funding for MAP from the Law Faculty capex or opex budget? Or
from University Capex or open? Or from tuition fees of the
individual students participating in the MAP program?  Or from
all students' tuition in the law faculty? 

MAP is funded through TECEF, with an internal University process
for allocating those funds. The tutorials, intensives, and workshops are
not funded from individual students’ tuition fees. In addition, the
University supports MAP through staff resourcing, including tutor salary
costs that are split between TECEF and Faculty funding. Two staff members
who support MAP are paid from Faculty funding rather than the TECEF
budget: the MAP Coordinator and the Māori Academic Mentor. 

 

5. Or is the MAP funding from a separate Diversity Equity Inclusion (DEI)
budget? 

See our response for Q4 above.

Thank you for your follow-up email.

Regarding your request for further information on the Faculty funding
component referred to in our previous response (in particular parts 1 and
4), the University does not hold a discrete or consolidated budget figure
for the Faculty contribution to the Māori Academic Programme (MAP).

As previously indicated, Faculty support for MAP is provided in part
through staff resourcing (including the MAP Coordinator and Māori Academic
Mentor roles), rather than through a separately identified or centrally
recorded budget allocation. The University does not hold further
information that breaks this contribution down into specific budget
figures.

Please note that the University is not required to create new information
in order to respond to a request.

You have the right to seek an investigation and review by an Ombudsman if
you are dissatisfied with this response.

follows:

The MAP does not have a defined FTE allocation. The MAP Coordinator and
Māori Academic Mentor roles have a range of responsibilities which include
the MAP; the FTE for these two roles cannot be attributed solely to the
MAP, and no specific proportion of their roles is attributed to their MAP
responsibilities. The FTE allocated to the MAP is not limited to these two
staff, as other staff also have MAP responsibilities. 
The information requested is not held by the University. Your request is
refused under section 18(g) of the OIA. You have the right to make a
complaint to an Ombudsman if you are dissatisfied with the University's
response.
