Dear Southland District Council,
I request the following information regarding the potential continued presence of Moose / Elk (A. alces) in Fiordland National Park, held by Southland District Council.
Since 1995:
*Reports of moose sightings from members of the public.
*Any advice to Council on the presence of moose in the Fiordland National Park.
Any other information that would be relevant to determine the current status and history of moose in the Fiordland National Park.
The official position of Southland District Council on the "Fiordland moose question".

Hi Liam,
I am writing to you in relation to your request for official information
made under the Local Government Official Information and Meetings Act 1987
(LGOIMA).
Council does not hold any reports of moose sightings from members of the
public or any advice to Council on the presence of moose in the Fiordland
National Park.
Therefore, your request is refused under s 17(g) on the basis that Council
does not hold the requested information. Due to a lack of information, we
do not have an official position on the ‘Fiordland moose question’.
You have the right to seek an investigation and review by the Ombudsman of
this decision. Information about how to make a complaint is available at
[1]www.ombudsman.parliament.nz or freephone 0800 802 602.
Please note, the information provided to you in response to your request
may be put on Council's website for the interest of the general public -
this is part of the best practice guidelines from the office of the
