Request for reported IPV victims by gender
Dee made this Official Information request to Ministry of Justice
This request has an unknown status. We're waiting for Dee to read a recent response and update the status.
From: Dee
Dear Ministry of Justice,
I am kindly requesting general statistics on reported domestic intimate partner violence (IPV), with victim statistics are broken down by gender (eg male vs female victims) and type of IPV (physical vs sexual).
If possible over the last 5 years with numbers per year, and include, if available, statistics on reported IPV's that resulted in successful conviction.
If detailed numbers are significant to collate, approximate percentages would be fine.
Yours faithfully,
Dee

Tçnâ koe Dee,
Thank you for your email of 21 March 2026, requesting data on IPV
statistics, under the Official Information Act 1982 (the Act).
Specifically, you requested:
1. …general statistics on reported domestic intimate partner violence
(IPV), with victim statistics are broken down by gender (eg male vs
female victims) and type of IPV (physical vs sexual).
2. If possible over the last 5 years with numbers per year, and include,
if available, statistics on reported IPV's that resulted in successful
conviction.
Attached to this email is a letter informing you that we have transferred
Q1 of your request to the Police for response.
In response to the remainder of your request (Q2), the Ministry does not
record data to the level of detail required to answer your request. New
reporting would need to be created to answer these parts of your request
and there is no requirement under the Act for agencies to do this to
respond to a request. Therefore, Q2 is refused under section 18(g)(i) of
the Act, as the information is not held by the Ministry, or any other
agency subject to the Act.
If you are not satisfied with this response, you have the right to make a
complaint to the Ombudsman under section 28 of the Act. The Office of the
Ombudsman may be contacted by phone on: 0800 802 602, by email at:
[1][email address], or via the webform: [2]Make a complaint

I refer to your request below. Police requires an extension of time in
which to respond to your request, pursuant to section 15A(1) of the
Official Information Act 1982 (OIA). Specifically, section 15A(1)(b),
consultations necessary to make a decision on the request are such that a
proper response to the request cannot reasonably be made within the
original time limit.
Police requires until 27 May 2026 to provide a substantive response to
your request, however we are endeavouring to provide this to you as soon
as possible.
You have the right, under section 28(3) of the OIA, to make a complaint to
an Ombudsman about this extension. Information about how to make a
complaint is available at [1]www.ombudsman.parliament.nz or freephone 0800
