Official Information Act Request: Statistics on intimiate partner violence (IPV)
I refer to your Official Information Act 1982 (the Act) request of 21 March 2026, to the
Ministry of Justice (the Ministry). Specifically, you requested:
1. …general statistics on reported domestic intimate partner violence (IPV), with victim
statistics are broken down by gender (eg male vs female victims) and type of IPV
(physical vs sexual).
2. If possible over the last 5 years with numbers per year, and include, if available,
statistics on reported IPV's that resulted in successful conviction. If detailed numbers
are significant to collate, approximate percentages would be fine
I have transferred part 1 your request to the New Zealand Police (the Police). The
information to which your request relates to in part 1 is not held by the Ministry and is
believed to be more closely connected with the functions of the Police. In these
circumstances, we are required by section 14 of the Act to transfer your request.
You wil hear further from the Police concerning part 1 of your request in due course. Should
you need to contact them, you can do so at: [email address].
The Ministry wil be responding to the remainder of your request by no later than 21 April
2026.
If you are not satisfied with this response, you have the right to make a complaint to the
Ombudsman under section 28 of the Act. The Office of the Ombudsman may be contacted
by phone on 0800 802 602, by email at [email address], or via the webform
