Official Information Act Request — Assessments or Data Relating to Extremist Ideologies Comparable to the Bondi Junction Attacker
Agnes Fecher made this Official Information request to New Zealand Police
This request has an unknown status. We're waiting for Agnes Fecher to read a recent response and update the status.
From: Agnes Fecher
Dear New Zealand Police,
I am writing to request information under the Official Information Act 1982.
Following public reporting on the Bondi Junction attack in Sydney, and broader concerns about ideologically motivated violence, I am seeking information held by your agency relating to assessments of extremist ideologies that may pose a public safety risk in New Zealand.
This request is made in the public interest, to assist affected communities, including NZ's Jewish community, to better understand the nature and scale of risks identified by government agencies, and to support informed community safety planning and engagement with public institutions.
Specifically, I request:
- Any reports, assessments, briefings, or analytical material held by Police that discuss the presence, prevalence, or risk of extremist ideologies in New Zealand comparable to those publicly attributed to the Bondi Junction attacker, insofar as those views are characterised in official reporting as violent, extremist, or posing a threat to public safety.
- Any high-level estimates, trend analyses, or qualitative assessments (whether quantitative or descriptive) held by Police regarding the number or proportion of individuals in New Zealand assessed as holding such views, where such information already exists.
Any definitions, frameworks, or criteria used by Police to categorise or assess such ideologies for policy, regulatory, or public-safety purposes.
Any inter-agency communications, briefings, or advice to Ministers prepared by Police following the Bondi Junction incident that reference implications, parallels, or relevance to New Zealand.
I am not seeking the identification of any individuals, nor am I requesting that Police create new data, estimates, or analysis. This request is limited strictly to information already held by the Agency.
If any part of this request is refused, I ask that all reasonably separable and releasable information be provided, and that any withheld material clearly identify the relevant withholding grounds under the Act.
If NZ Police considers that all or part of this request is more closely connected with the functions of another agency, I request that it be transferred under section 14 of the Act.
Thank you for your consideration.
Yours sincerely,
Agnes Fecher

You requested information (OIA reference IR-01-25-46440) relating to the: "[ …] public reporting on the Bondi Junction attack in Sydney, and broader concerns about ideologically motivated violence, I am seeking information held by your agency relating to assessments of extremist ideologies that may pose a public safety risk in New Zealand."
You also mention that your "request is made in the public interest, to assist affected communities, including NZ's Jewish community [ … ]."
Your reference to the “Bondi Junction attack” commonly refers to a mass stabbing at Westfield Mall in Bondi in April 2024. However, considering this information is sought in part "[…] to assist affected communities, including NZ's Jewish community […]," can you please confirm whether you request is related to the Westfield Mall incident in 2024, or the Bondi Beach shootings in December 2025. Either event requires the collation of a significant number of documents, and therefore, to respond to you within the statutory timeframe, we seek clarification as to which incident you are referring to.
Please respond as soon as possible so that we can prepare the response for you.

Thank you for the request for clarification.

Kia ora Agnes
I refer to your request below. I have been asked to advise you that Police requires an extension of time in which to respond to your request, pursuant to section 15A(1) of the Official Information Act 1982 (OIA). Specifically, section 15A(1)(a), the request is for a large quantity of official information or necessitates a search through a large quantity of information and meeting the original time limit would unreasonably interfere with the operations of the organisation.
Police requires until 24 March 2026 to provide a substantive response to your request, however we are endeavouring to provide this to you as soon as possible.
You have the right, under section 28(3) of the OIA, to make a complaint to an Ombudsman about this extension. Information about how to make a complaint is available at www.ombudsman.parliament.nz or freephone 0800 802 602.
Kind regards, Michelle
Advisor – Police National Headquarters
