NZ Wars national day of commemoration

Rowan Patrick made this Official Information request to Ministry for Culture and Heritage

This request has an unknown status. We're waiting for Rowan Patrick to read recent responses and update the status.

From: Rowan Patrick

Kia ora Ministry for Culture and Heritage,

I would like all MCH reports, correspondence, minutes, etc., relating to the discussion, planning, and implementing of the NZ Wars national day of commemoration (now officially He Ra Maumahara, Te Putake o Te Riri) since 2000. I realise some of this will sit with TPK and other agencies, but I'd like to collate the MCH side of the planning and discussion. I am especially interested in the earlier discussions around a possible day of commemoration, prior to the Otorohanga school petition in 2015. Any reference to NZ Wars in wider commemoration policy since 2000 would be helpful too.

Thanks for your time

Nga mihi

Thank you for your request under Official Information Act 1982 (the OIA)
to Manatū Taonga the Ministry for Culture and Heritage.

As you are aware, the policy and funding responsibility for He Rā
Maumahara, Te Putake o Te Riri sits with Te Puni Kōkiri. Most of the
information relating to your request will be held by Te Puni Kōkiri.

It is likely that the information that the Ministry holds will largely be
administrative (meeting invites, for example). To assist us to answer your
request in a useful way, can you please confirm that you would be willing
to refine the request (under section 151AA of the OIA) to include
"substantive planning and implementation advice" only, and not
"administrative information"?

Please confirm whether you would like to proceed with this refined scope.
If you have any questions or would like to discuss your request, please
get in touch with us at [1][email address].

Unfortunately, our initial searching (research) for "He Rā Maumahara" and
"New Zealand Wars"/"NZ Wars" with the current timeframe has returned over
200,000 results. Unless your request is further refined, we may have to
refuse it under section 18(f) of the OIA, which applies where the
information cannot be made available without substantial collation or
research.

Please let us know before 24 December 2025 whether you are prepared to
amend or clarify your request. For example, refining the timeframe or
providing more specific parameters for the information (such as only
information related to the Otorohanga School petition) or only information
sent from Manatū Taonga to the Minister at the time, or to TPK etc.

If you have any questions or would like to discuss your request, please
get in touch with us at [1][email address].
