Miramar No Man Land Traffic Islands - Total Carparks Removed, Total Cost & Maintenance Costs
Chris McCashin made this Official Information request to Wellington City Council
This request has an unknown status. We're waiting for Chris McCashin to read recent responses and update the status.
      From: Chris McCashin

    Dear Wellington City Council,
Sometime back there were a number of poorly positioned traffic islands put in Miramar at the expense of carparks when they were not needed. They have also been put in positions whereby they are outside properties (though not directly and in poor locations) and per council policy landowners are expected to maintain the berms / grass verges. I regularly walk through Miramar and note these berms / no man land grass traffic islands are now always overgrown being an eyesore in the community. Just another project the ratepayer / landowners in the area didn't want but council went ahead anyway and now the ratepayer is picking up the ongoing cost of maintaining these berms because they aren't in positions landowners in the area should be responsible for.
Under the provisions of the Local Government Official Information and Meetings Act 1987 (LGOIMA), I am requesting the following information regarding the installation of “no man’s land” traffic islands in the suburb of Miramar:
The total number of new or modified traffic islands installed in Miramar since January 2020.
The total cost of these installations, including materials, labour, and any associated planning or consultation costs.
The number of car parks removed in Miramar as a direct result of installing these traffic islands.
Please provide information about the rationale for positioning these islands, especially where they are not directly aligned with houses.
Any documents, reports, or correspondence regarding the design decisions or placement of these traffic islands—particularly in cases where residents have raised concerns about their location, loss of parking, or maintenance responsibilities.
If possible, please provide a map or table indicating the locations of these islands.
Also provide the total times a council contractor has been asked to mow these and the associated cost, additionally any of these silly islands that have since been concreted over as a couple appear to have been.
If you require any clarification of this request, please let me know as soon as possible. I look forward to your response within the statutory timeframe.
Thank-you again for confirming why people in Wellington hate council.
Yours faithfully,
Chris
