Dean's Determination of the Application of Selection Criteria – FMHS 2026

Boris made this Official Information request to University of Auckland

Response to this request is delayed. By law, University of Auckland should normally have responded promptly and by (details and exceptions)

From: Boris

Dear University of Auckland,

1. Please provide the Dean's Determination of the Application of Selection Criteria – FMHS 2026 or equivalent document (noting that a document entitled "Dean's Determination of the Application of Selection Criteria – FMHS 2025" has been released -https://fyi.org.nz/request/30132/respons...)

2. If the method for ranking in 2026 is the same as outlined in the 2025 document which states that "In each admission category, the First Year and Graduate applicant data is analysed together to calculate the mean and standard deviation of the admissions category. The following groups are analysed together:
• General entry First Years + General entry Graduates + UTAS First Years + UTAS Graduates... Each of the above groups is then sorted based on their ranking score to determine an ordered list of highest to lowest ranking. Offers are made to applicants in order until the places in each category are filled."

Then, please provide confirmation of the following:

a. Is there any delineation applied to ranking methods or calculations of first year and graduate applicants? The explanation above is unclear on what the "groups" and "categories" are for the purposes of analysis and ranking. I note that in the past, FY have been analysed against FY and graduates against graduates with the use of standardisation before being ranked together. This appears to have been in an attempt to ensure fair evaluation between the cohorts - "Mean and standard deviation are calculated from the scores for each category. In the General admissions category, FY mean and standard deviation are calculated independently of Grad mean and standard deviation. This ensures that both FY and Grad applicants are evaluated fairly." (see letter from Auckland University of 24 November 2021 - https://fyi.org.nz/request/17448-mbchb-i...)

b. If the current approach (2025 for 2026) represents any change to the the method outlined in the letter of 24 November 2021, please outline the rationale for this.

If it assists in your answering my requests, I am essentially seeking to understand in as detailed and granular a level as possible how graduate general applicants are ranked as compared to FY general applicants, and whether there has been an actual change in approach between 2021 as outlined in the referenced letter and the present, or merely a change in how the information has been communicated.

Yours faithfully,

Boris

Dear Boris,

I refer to your request below. As consultations necessary to make a decision on your request are such that a response cannot reasonably be given within the original time limit, the University has extended the time limit for your request until 20 October 2025 under section 15A(1)(b) of the OIA. We will respond to your request as soon as reasonably practicable.

You have the right to make a complaint to an Ombudsman if you are dissatisfied with this extension.

Dear Landon Watt,

Thanks for your response.

While I can understand consultations may be required to answer my queries, I assume the dean’s determination (or equivalent) is a document that was settled months ago and has been and is being used to guide the current selection process for 2026 intake.

Could the University please provide the document in the interim even if other matters will take more tune? If not, why not?

Many thanks

Yours sincerely,

Boris
