Renaming of Universities
Luke made this Official Information request to Erica Stanford
This request has an unknown status. We're waiting for Luke to read recent responses and update the status.
From: Luke
Dear Erica Stanford,
A number of Universities have recently adopted new Maori names and begun a process of soft-rebranding that places emphasis on their (new) bilingual names.
For example, Victoria University of Wellington has begun exclusively referring to itself as "Te Herenga Waka - Victoria University of Wellington" in all communications, including official communications, such as its Annual Report and University Calendar.
Meanwhile, the University of Auckland refers to itself as "Waipapa Taumata Rau, University of Auckland" in its Annual Report and in all media publications. Other Universities have taken similar positions.
Can you please confirm whether any University (since 2021) has presented notice to the Minister, any former Minister, and/or the Ministry under section 268(5) of the Education and Training Act 2020?
Yours faithfully,
Luke
