The number of children confirmed as suffering physical abuse prior and subsequent to the 2007 amendment that banned the corporal punishment of children.
Alan Corbett made this Official Information request to Ministry of Social Development
The request was successful.
From: Alan Corbett
Dear Ministry of Social Development,
One of the reasons given to justify a ban on the corporal punishment of children is the likelihood that what commences as a smack can escalate into an act of physical abuse because a parent loses control over their actions. By asking for the number of children who have been confirmed as suffering physical abuse in the seven years prior to and since the 2007 amendment to the Crimes Act, I hope to explore this assumption.
Yours faithfully,
Alan Corbett
