Dear Elaine Tunai-Po,
Thanks for answering one of the questions. The number of staff terminated will be in your HR and payroll records. I assume you keep payroll and financial info for many years (as opposed to private health status info).
How many Auckland Council staff were terminated for not being vaccinated please in the timeframe I asked? Please supply the requested information.
Yours sincerely,
Erika Whittome

Thank you for your follow up question on 29 April 2024. Please accept my
apologies for the delay in providing this to you.
Auckland Council’s employee information currently sits across a number of
different systems. As mentioned in our initial response, in accordance
with our Privacy Act 1993 obligations, we purged data in our employee
files which related to vaccination status (captured in a specific field in
our employee files system).
We also keep payroll and employee financial information in line with our
legal obligations, with information about termination of employment being
simply recorded (in these instances) as either ‘resignation’ or
‘dismissal’. The reason for the termination is not required for the
purposes of our payroll systems, but one of the fields in that system is
an optional free text ‘notes’ field. It is not required to be filled out
in order for a termination to be processed, however in some cases, free
text entries are made by people leaders.
In response to your follow up question, we checked our payroll and
employee financial information to be sure that there wasn’t any
information relevant to your request, including searching one of our free
text ‘notes’ field in the system for the word ‘vaccination’ crossed
checked with the two relevant termination reasons. This search showed that
there were seven employees who either resigned or were dismissed, and had
a note mentioning ‘vaccination’ in the free text field. However, as this
was not a routine approach to recording termination information, it is
important to note that this information is likely to be incomplete or
inaccurate. There was not any cross checking or alignment between the
payroll system and formal employee files at the time these entries were
made. We have now also purged that information (again in accordance with
our Privacy Act 1993 obligations) and do not hold any further information
about employees whose employment was terminated due to their vaccination
status on our employee files or our payroll files.
The decision by Auckland Council to release the information contained in
this response was made by Pauline d'Unienville, General Manager People and
Culture.
You have the right to seek an investigation and review of this response by
the Ombudsman. Information about how to make a complaint is available at
[1]www.ombudsman.parliament.nz or freephone 0800 802 602.
If you have any questions please contact me at
