Wellington Railway Station New World/Trax

Mike Campbell made this Official Information request to KiwiRail

The request was refused by KiwiRail.

From: Mike Campbell

Dear KiwiRail,

As of March 31 2024, New World will be vacating their spot in the Wellington Railway Station which has been there for years. We have heard the Trax Restaurant and Bar will be vacating too.

As the New World supermarket has been supposedly leased, what is replacing New World supermarket? Will it be another supermarket, fast food or offices.

Yours faithfully,
Mike

Good afternoon Mike

Thank you for your request under the OIA asking for information on the shops in the Wellington Railway Station as noted below.

Please be advised we will have to decline your request at this stage under Section 9(2)(j) - Commercial negotiations, as there ongoing discussions with potential tenants.

However, we can advise the below, which we are sharing with local media as well.

KiwiRail is working with Wellington City Council and local food truck operators to provide services once the current Wellington Railway Station supermarket closes next week.
KiwiRail Executive General Manager Property Anna Allen says "we've got station users covered between tenancies, with food trucks operating outside the station entrance from Tuesday 2 April."
"The operators we have confirmed are The Greek Food Truck, Nada Bakery, Hong Kong Foodie, Gluten Free Food Truck, Shouk NZ and Kosmos Coffee.
"We're very aware that many of those using the station also use the supermarket to buy breakfast, lunch or dinner, and we wanted to ensure that type of service would still be available, so we have worked with the Council to make this happen.
"Council permission is for an initial six-month period."
The supermarket has announced it will cease operating on March 30 ahead of its lease expiry in June.

KiwiRail is continuing to negotiate with potential tenants for the space and knows how good the location is as a supermarket, but is not in a position to comment further at this stage.

Any further questions, please get in touch with me at this email address.

You have the right to seek an investigation and review by the Ombudsman of this decision. Information about how to make a complaint is available at www.ombudsman.parliament.nz or freephone 0800 802 602.

Kind regards

Dave
