Fire-break Shag Point

James Russell made this Official Information request to Fire and Emergency New Zealand

Fire and Emergency New Zealand did not have the information requested.

From: James Russell

Dear New Zealand Fire Service Commission,

For reference; Forest and Rural Fires Act 1977 Section 27 (1). (a) & (b)

There are several landholder properties in Shag Point, "...on which exotic trees grow for the purpose of producing timber..." Some of these properties bound the main Shag Point road.

Some of their trees are to the extreme boundary, and extend their branches, over road reserve, and almost over top of the whole of the sealed road.

Why is there no fire break between these and the residential township properties?

On properties within which, a fire break has been made. there is over the whole of that fire break, cut branches from those exotic trees, dry, and almost a meter deep, that should, if a fire officer was to give an opinion, be that these branches "...be removed for the purpose of fire control."

Why are these permitted to remain?

James Russell

From: James Russell

Dear Rob Pope,

Thank you Rob Pope, for your advice (11 March 14) copied below;

“The Rural Fire Authority for Shag Point in [sic (again)] the Otago Rural
Fire Authority and this Authority has responsibility for risk
management in this area.
The New Zealand Fire Authority doesn’t hold information or
background material relating to this request.”

Did in the consideration of my request, the NZ Fire Service
Commission consider Section 14 “Transfer of Requests” of the
Official Information Act 1982?

Yours sincerely,

James Russell
