Safety case for Te Huia train operating cab car SRV5893 or equivalent at head of train
Patrick Dunford made this Official Information request to New Zealand Transport Agency
The request was successful.
From: Patrick Dunford
Dear New Zealand Transport Agency,
My query concerns the recent commencement of Te Huia services using cab car SRV5893 and/or other equivalents at the head of the services operating between Hamilton and Auckland.
Are there any operational restrictions when SRV5893 or equivalents are used at the head of a Te Huia train?
If any operational restrictions exist what are these?
If there are any operational restrictions that exist because the cab does not meet current crash safety standards for rolling stock how would it be appropriate for a commercial passenger service to operate under restrictions that are mainly intended for heritage rolling stock operated by community groups?
Yours faithfully,
Patrick Dunford

From: Dave Allard
Good morning Patrick
Please find our response below to your recent enquiry, transferred to
KiwiRail from NZTA.
The SRV cabs were built to internationally recognised crashworthiness
standards and have been maintained in good structural condition.
They are however lighter vehicles than the DFB locomotives and do not have
a short hood.
For this reason, speed restrictions have been adopted at certain level
crossings on the Te Huia route where KiwiRail’s assessment indicates large
road / farm vehicles may be present. This is a very conservative approach
to the push mode on Te Huia and is not strictly necessary.
The safety case for push pull operation on the Te Huia route has been
approved by the regulator, Waka Kotahi.
Kind regards
Dave
