Regular Force and Territorial Force Personnel Numbers

Liam made this Official Information request to New Zealand Defence Force

The request was successful.

From: Liam

Dear New Zealand Defence Force,

Could you please provide me with the number of RF and TF personnel (including civilians) for the last 10 years. Please separate the two sets of data.

Further, could you please provide the number of new recruits for both RF and TF every year for the last 10 years. Also, please separate.

Finally, please provide what policy the NZDF has with regards to TF soldiers who do not attend the minimum amount of days training required of them (please provide the expectation of amount of service per year). And what is the NZDF doing to ensure that training and equipment sunk into these TF recruits is worth the costs and not just providing a "summer job" with TF soldiers not continuing to participate in exercises.

I am a New Zealand citizen, as required by s12(1) of the OIA Act 1982.

Yours faithfully,

Liam Stoneley

Dear Ministerial Services,

Thank you for your reply.

Is the NZDF requesting an extension to the 20 working day period under s 15A of the OIA 1982? Because the period by which the Act stipulates a reponse concludes on the 13th of February this year. You have stated the 16th.

Please advise.

Yours sincerely,

Liam Stoneley

Dear Mr Stoneley,

Thank you for your email regarding your OIA request. Your request was received by the NZDF on 12 January 2015. The interpretation section of the Official Information Act states that "a day in the period commencing with 25 December in any year and ending with 15 January in the following year" does not constitute a working day as defined in the Act. Waitangi Day likewise does not constitute a working day under the Act. Accordingly, the response timeframe for a response to your request commenced on 16 January 2015.

Ministerial Services will notify you via email if a formal extension to the response timeframe is required.

Best regards,

Dear Ministerial Services,

Thank you for clarifying that issue. However, it is my understanding that the 13th would be the end of 20 working days. See below:

16/19/20/21/22/23/26/27/28/29/30/2/3/4/5/9/10/11/12/13th

That adds up to 20 working days? Please advise.

Dear Mr Stoneley,

Thank you for your message regarding your OIA. The initial due date calculation had excluded Wellington Anniversary day (19 January) as a working day. The due date for a response to your request is 13 February, and has been amended in our records.
