Gisborne District Council
Kia ora David
Thank you for your request for information dated 7 August 2023 via
fyi.org.nz as follows:
Can you please release any guidance issued to staff or contractors on the
pre-election period 2023 including social media conduct.
Your request has been considered under the Local Government Official
Information and Meetings Act 1987 and has been granted.
This Friday 18 August 2023 staff will receive the following guidance.
The General Parliamentary Elections are being held on 14 October 2023.
The formal 3-month pre-election period commences on 14 July 2023. While
local authority employees are not subject to the requirements placed on
public servants with respect to their protocols as Government employees,
(such as political neutrality and the provision of free and frank advice),
we need to adhere to some simple universal rules around use of Council
resources.
So just as for local elections, the use of Council resources for the
general election is not permitted, nor is the use of our Council work time
in campaigning for a party or candidate in the general election.
Ngā mihi
Heather
