OIA: [METIS 1315495] – Complaints made regarding Mâori teachings or
 Mâtauranga Mâori
Thank you for your email of 2 August 2023 to the Ministry of Education
 requesting the following information:

Could you please provide any complaints made directly to the Ministry of
Education via local ministry offices about Mâori teachings or Mâtauranga
Mâori being included in the primary and secondary school curriculums.

Please provide the correspondence in full - including responses from the
ministry - plus data about the number of complaints broken down by year

Your request has been considered under the Official Information Act 1982
 (the Act).

The Ministry does not hold the information you are seeking. While
complaints are categorised in the Ministry’s records, there is no category
which corresponds with your request. To date, we have located one email
complaint, which we are withholding under section 9(2)(a) of the Act, to
protect the privacy of natural persons. Anecdotally, we have been advised
that some regions have received verbal complaints, but these have not been
 recorded.

I am therefore refusing your request under section 18(g) of the Act, as
the information requested is not held by the Ministry in a form that
enables us to retrieve it, and we have no grounds for believing that it is
either held by or more closely related to the functions of another
department or organisation subject to the Act.

Thank you again for your email. You have the right to ask an Ombudsman to
review my decision on your request, in accordance with section 28 of the
Act. You can do this by writing to [1][email address] or to
Office of the Ombudsman, PO Box 10152, Wellington 6143.
