Reasoning for returning to full fares

Zac Ringrose made this Official Information request to New Zealand Transport Agency

This request has an unknown status. We're waiting for Zac Ringrose to read a recent response and update the status.

From: Zac Ringrose

Dear New Zealand Transport Agency,

I was just wanting to get an understanding on the reasoning for returning to full fares for over 25's.

I am referring to this story: https://www.beehive.govt.nz/release/targ...

- Could I get the projections / forecasting that would substantiate the quote of the Climate Change Minister "This increase in funding will help us to take cars off the road while cutting pollution that goes into the atmosphere. More people using public transport is critical to reducing our climate emissions and to increasing our wellbeing."

Yours faithfully,
Z

Dear Anita Waring,

Thank you for the response, however my OIA was asking why the fares are returning to full price for over 25's, so would like the forecasting to include those over the age of 25 and up to 65 as I am wanting to see what trends there are in the data for the Climate Minister to suggest that this change will have more people using public transport.

Yours sincerely,
Zac Ringrose

From: Anita Waring

Hi Zac

I refer to your follow up request of 14 September 2023.

We do not hold forecasting for ages 25 to 65 as these age groups were not considered for concessions.

The article you refer to discusses a package of initiatives aimed at improving public transport. Alongside the fare discounts, the article announces funding to increase bus driver wages and to help councils reinstate services to pre-pandemic levels. These were intended to reduce the bus driver shortage and increase service frequency and reliability to encourage more people to choose public transport. We did not do any modelling on the impacts of these initiatives.

I am therefore refusing your follow up request under Section 18(e) of the Official Information Act.

You have the right to seek an investigation and review of this response by the Ombudsman, in accordance with section 28(3) of the Act. The relevant details can be found on the Ombudsman’s website http://www.ombudsman.parliament.nz/
