London Bridge is down. The Queen is dead
Requestor made this Official Information request to Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet
The request was successful.
From: Requestor
TO: Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet,
Formerly the Head of State of New Zealand was Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II in right of New Zealand. On the death of the Queen, King Charles III, as reigning constitutional monarch, became King of New Zealand and Head of State of New Zealand, as recognised by the Constitution Act 1986.
The phrase 'Her Majesty the Queen in right of New Zealand' was previously used in a number of contexts to reflect the concept that central government in New Zealand was carried out in the Sovereign's name and on her behalf.
The Courts of New Zealand documents now make reference to "The King" to reflect the demise of the Crown and its transfer, and no longer make reference to "The Queen". NZ law practitioners who held the rank of "Queen's Counsel" have become "King's Counsel" and now use the shorthand KC rather than QC on letterhead and other materials.
QUESTIONS:
1. Are the Queen's Justices/Judges now referred to as the King's Justices/Judges?
2. Have Executive Council, Ministries, Departments and Agencies made adjustments reflecting the aforesaid points? eg. 'His Majesty the King in right of New Zealand'
3. Is the Executive Council, Ministries, Departments and Agencies still in the practice of using references to 'The Queen...', or the like, in any of its business undertakings, activities, acts or transactions, both within and outside New Zealand?
4. If 'yes' to any of the activities listed at no. 3 hereinabove, what are those activities and what entity name is being used?
Thank you,
Requestor
