This is a request for official information under the Official Information Act 1982 relating to the climate reduce certification your organisation has received from Toitū.
We request information that answers the following questions:
1. How many years has your organisation been affiliated with Toitū?
2. How much does it cost your organisation to maintain certification, including fees from Toitū and costs related to meeting these requirements?
a. If different, what were the initial up-front costs to achieve compliance with certification standards and achieve certification in the first place?
3. Does the organisation plan to achieve CarbonZero/Carbon Positive certification, and if so, why, and under what timeframe?
a. If not, why?
4. Has the organisation considered other certification/auditors, or in-house auditing of their climate emissions as an alternative to Toitū?

Dear Regan,
We refer to your request of 29 March for information relating to TVNZ’s
Toitū membership and certification.
We answer each query in turn:
1. How many years has your organisation been affiliated with Toitū?
Since 2021.
2. How much does it cost your organisation to maintain certification,
including fees from Toitū and costs related to meeting these
requirements?
Annual membership fee is $17,500 + GST. Additionally, there is an Annual
Audit Certification Fee of $7,900 + GST.
a. If different, what were the initial up-front costs to achieve
compliance with certification standards and achieve certification in
the first place?
A joining fee of $2,500 + GST.
3. Does the organisation plan to achieve CarbonZero/Carbon Positive
certification, and if so, why, and under what timeframe?
Per TVNZ’s FY22 Annual report, our aim is to be carbon neutral by the end
of FY23.
a. If not, why?
Not applicable.
4. Has the organisation considered other certification/auditors, or
in-house auditing of their climate emissions as an alternative to
Toitū?
No. We do not have inhouse expertise for certification or audit of climate
emissions.
Your subsequent request of 4 April for a copy of the agreement between
TVNZ and Toitū is declined under Section 9(2)(b)(ii) of the Act. However
we can confirm that there are no onerous conditions attached to the
agreement.
In accordance with Section 19(b) of the Act we advise that you have the
right to seek an investigation and review of the above refusal by making a
complaint under Section 28(3) to an Ombudsman.
