Reasons for such regular "research" done in Pirongia
Chayearnika made this Official Information request to New Zealand Transport Agency
The request was partially successful.
From: Chayearnika
Dear New Zealand Transport Agency,
I would like to request the reasons for your consistent and regular posistioning of your research vans and or traffic camera vans located in and around the King Country/Waipa regions please? I'm not sure how much research you need to gather or the number of speeding drivers you must catch? If you could please clarify the numbers of this and the reasons why it is high in these regions please? And the number of traffic offenses to date please.
Have a good day
Yours faithfully,
C.Arnika

New Zealand Transport Agency
Good afternoon Chayearnika
I refer to your request for information made under the Official
Information Act 1982
You have asked for:
I would like to request the reasons for your consistent and regular
positioning of your research vans and or traffic camera vans located in
and around the King Country/Waipa regions please?
I'm not sure how much research you need to gather or the number of
speeding drivers you must catch?
If you could please clarify the numbers of this and the reasons why it is
high in these regions please and the number of traffic offences to date
please?
I have considered your request under the Official Information Act
1982, and can advise you of the following;
* Police is a committed partner to Road to Zero, New Zealand’s road
safety strategy – a strategy with the goal of reducing the number of
people being killed or seriously injured on our roads by 40% by 2030,
and the ultimate vision that no-one is killed or injured in road
crashes.
* To achieve this, Police’s role in the strategy is to promote safe
choices and this includes encouraging everyone to travel at safe and
appropriate speeds. A substantial body of international evidence shows
an exponential relationship between speed and the risk of fatal
crashes. This means as speed increases, the fatal crash risk increases
by a proportionally greater amount. For example, when the mean driving
speed reduces by 5 km/h, the rate of fatal injuries in crashes reduces
by 28%.
* The use of safe speed camera vehicles supports Police’s “anytime,
anywhere” approach to speed enforcement. Research shows that
enforcement action remains the biggest deterrent to unsafe driving
behaviour. Safe speed cameras have a proven history of reducing
speed-related crashes internationally. These cameras assist to reduce
serious and fatal crashes on New Zealand roads.
* Police has published information regarding safety camera selection
methodology on our website:
[1]https://www.police.govt.nz/advice-servic...
* Police regularly publishes a number of driving related offence
datasets on our website, including the number of speed offences
detected by mobile safe speed cameras. This information is updated
quarterly. The latest available data can be found here:
[2]https://www.police.govt.nz/about-us/publ...
Accordingly, this part of your request is refused pursuant to section
18(d) of the OIA, as the information requested is, or will soon be
publicly available.
Please consider this request now closed.
You have the right to ask the Ombudsman to review my decision if you are
not satisfied with Police’s response to your request.
Kind regards
WL (Bill) CROWE
