Criteria classifying a ‘ram raid’ and frequency and quantity of 'ram raids'
Holly Willson made this Official Information request to New Zealand Police
The request was partially successful.
      From: Holly Willson

    Dear New Zealand Police,
Last year, RNZ stated that:
“Data released to RNZ under the Official Information Act showed in the 12 months until July the police recorded 436 ram raids.
That figure was more than double the 12 months before it, when there were 191 ram raids recorded.
In the same 12 months five years ago, there were 84 ram raids recorded.”
(Source: 400% increase in ram raids, few prosecutions - police data, 21 July 2022, https://www.rnz.co.nz/news/business/4713...).
Please could you provide:
1. An outline or summary of criteria classifying a ‘ram raid’ used in the OIA release to RNZ (July 2022)
2. An outline or summary of official criteria classifying a ‘ram raid’ used by NZ Police, including any documentation explaining the category ‘ram raid’ or any briefer description of how NZ Police classify offending according to the category 'ram raid'
3. The quantity and frequency of ‘ram raids’ reported (whether charges were laid or not) nationally, using the NZ Police criteria/classification, by month or week (whichever is more appropriate) since 21 July 2022.
3a. If there are a range of offences that fall under the classification of a ‘ram raid’, please break down instances of ‘ram raids’ reported by each offence.
4. The number of charges or prosecutions related to ‘ram raids’ under this classification or range of offences falling under 'ram raids', carried out over the same period (July 2022 to the most recent records).

I refer to your request of 12 February 2023 for information about ram
 raids.

I have been asked to advise you that Police requires an extension of time
in which to respond to your request, pursuant to section 15A(1) of the
Official Information Act 1982 (OIA). Specifically, section 15A(1)(a), the
request necessitates a search through a large quantity of information and
meeting the original time limit would unreasonably interfere with the
 operations of the organisation.

Police requires until 21 March 2023 to provide a substantive response to
your request. We are endeavouring to provide this to you as soon as
 possible.
You have the right, under section 28(3) of the OIA, to make a complaint to
 an Ombudsman about this extension.

If you wish to discuss any aspect of your request with us, including this
decision, please feel free to contact
 [1][email address].

Ngā mihi,
