New Zealand's National Security System

Neville Hudson made this Official Information request to Ministry of Health

The request was successful.

From: Neville Hudson

Dear Ministry of Health,

According to the New Zealand's National Security System document the Ministry of Health has a role to play to co-ordinate and direct the national response to a major crises ..(such as bio-security problem, health emergency..) within New Zealand...

I seek information as to who within the Ministry is in the group who will make any decisions regarding the abola virus, what resources are available for protection and containment, who will monitor any protocols, who will develop protocols, and who will make and under what criteria will the decision by made to close the boarder.

At what stage will the general public be advised of any decisions made that will affect their safety and well being. Given that the United States seems unable to effectively monitor and control those associated with ebola and the ease the virus seems to spread it seems a case of when rather than if the virus arrives in New Zealand.

Information currently available suggests New Zealand is far from ready for such an emergency and seems to lack resources and protocols to deal with such an emergency.

Yours faithfully,

Neville Hudson

From: Neville Hudson

Dear Ministry of Health,

The information I requested was based on the status at the time of making the application. Now the New Zealand Government has encouraged New Zealanders to go and assist in the fight against Ebola. This changes things dramatically in that New Zealand has gone from an outside chance to a probable chance of having Ebola enter our Country when our citizens return.

What additional measures have been put into place to ensure maximum protection against Ebola?

What protective equipment is available to protect those who may come in contact with those returning or their equipment? Who has been identified as being at risk? What facilities are available close the airport to house those returning? If transport to a place away from the airport is required, what protective measures are in place for those along the route and to ensure 100% containment?
What makes you confident that you can contain Ebola better than the USA and those at the Ebola source?

Regards,

Neville Hudson

What additional measures have been
