Number of callouts for unexplained deaths

P Taylor made this Official Information request to Fire and Emergency New Zealand

Fire and Emergency New Zealand did not have the information requested.

From: P Taylor

Dear Fire and Emergency New Zealand,

1. Under the Official Information Act 1982, I would like to request any information that will show the total number of events attended to by Fire and Emergency New Zealand each year during 2018, 2019, 2020, and 2021 where any attending firefighter, or officer, might reasonably understand that the event attended to was due to a suspected suicide.

2. To assist in the interpretation of this request, I am unsure of the correct term currently used by Fire and Emergency New Zealand for recording an unexplained death or suspected suicide. I am attempting to establish how many suspected suicides are attended to by Fire and Emergency New Zealand.

3. I am aware that this number will include other deaths that are not due to suicide.

Yours faithfully,

P Taylor

Kia ora P Taylor

Thank you for your request.

When attending non-fire related incidents involving a fatality, Fire and
Emergency New Zealand attend in a support capacity. We do not record
whether the fatality was a suicide or otherwise, as determining cause of
death in these circumstances is not our function.

We have considered whether your request could be transferred to Police as
your request is most aligned with their functions. However, your request
is specific to incidents attended by Fire and Emergency. Consequently, a
decision has been made to decline your request under section 18(g) of the
Official Information Act 1982, as the information requested is not held by
Fire and Emergency.

You have the right to seek an investigation and review by the Ombudsman of
this decision.  Information about how to make a complaint is available at
[1]www.ombudsman.parliament.nz or freephone 0800 802 602.

Kind regards,
