Thank you for your request under the Official Information Act 1982 (the
Act) to Manatū Hauora (the Ministry of Health) on 3 October 2022. You
requested: 

 

“Please provide how many newborn deaths there were from 1st January 2021
to 31st December 2021. 
Please also provide how many newborn deaths there have been been this year
from 1st January 2022 to the submitted date of this OIA.” 

 

Manatū Hauora publishes information on stillbirth rates, including
historical data, on its website as part of the fetal and infant deaths web
tool:

Please note 2020 is the latest year that infant death numbers are
currently available. Due issues relating to non-registration of infant
deaths, it is estimated that the 2021 data will become provisionally
available in the first half of 2023. Accordingly, the 2022 data will be
available after 2023.  

 

Under section 28(3) of the Act, you have the right to ask the Ombudsman to
review any decisions made under this request. The Ombudsman may be
