Costs incurred for John Sinclair
Barry Murphy made this Official Information request to Ministry of Justice
The request was partially successful.
From: Barry Murphy
Dear Ministry of Justice,
John Sinclair scammed me along with a number of other victims in 2018 and was sent to prison, he was on bail when he committed the offences.
In 2019, a number of people messaged me saying they had seen him doing the same thing again and I went on to report him and get all his scam posts taken down.
John Sinclair who was recently (2022) let out on Home Detention for scamming $284k off of 24 victims with no reparation and had been out on bail when he committed the offences.
When I went through the whole ordeal, I came to learn he was well known to police and at least every 2 years since a young teen and been in trouble with police.
My Questions:
1./ I'd like to know all the costs incurred by government for John Sinclair to date, broken down into categories where possible
- Policing costs (man hours spent each time he commits an offence).
- Court costs (the costs associated with Judges, Lawyers, tracking him down, etc).
- Jail costs (costs associated with him being in jail)
- Bail/Home Detention costs (costs associated with monitoring and check ups)
- Any other costs associated.
2./ I'd like to know the total value John Sinclair has stolen over his lifetime. The recent $287k in 2022, plus a break down by year for previous offences.
3./ If possible, I'd like to know the affects of social harm he has created. While the victims lives have completely changed, including myself, there is no way to put a dollar figure on this, but how does the justice system consider his gambling issue & that no jail sentence would help in his case. John Sinclair has clearly shown he does the same thing over and over and if I had been taken seriously in 2018 and 2019, the most recent victims would not have been in this current situation.
Yours faithfully,
Barry

Can you please clarify what you mean by any other costs? Is this just in
relation to anything other than policing, courts, jail and bail? If you
can refine this, it will help us to provide you with the exact information
you require.
Kind revert back to us as soon as possible so we can progress your

Hi Risha,
Any other costs could include psychiatric assessments, impact assessments, and pretty much any cost associated with John Sinclair that the government has incurred such as the time associated with responding to this OIA; where there is a record of it.
I ask for a breakdown as I want to know what the
- total cost (and per year) he has incurred to the tax payer for his life in crime
- total cost (and per year) incurred for his jail (as I believe it would be cheaper to keep him locked up than being out of jail)
- I want to see how much in total damage he has done to victims vs cost to government
He is a repeat offender that the government continues to let out with little to no consequences leaving further victims each time he is released and incurring further costs to the system that could be better spent on other services.
Many thanks
Barry

Dear Risha,
The John Sinclair I refer to you can see a picture of him half way down the page here and you can see his most recent offending- https://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/nest-egg-t...
As additional information, he was sentenced on 06/05/2019 for offending and I was rewarded reparation of $10,000. On 21 December 2021, Judge Jelas wrote to me advising he had initiated 38A of the sentencing act to cancel reparation to me.
Police case number 181129/7856 was logged by me and he was caught while out on bail.
Another one I reported as he was doing the same thing while out on bail is 191209/2910 (see https://www.facebook.com/icepicknz/posts...). There are many more from me (where he threatened my family and I had to leave home for a few days (police didn't even call me back)) and other victims.
With these additional pieces of information, I'm sure you can link the person referred to.
Yours sincerely,
Barry
