Dear Ministry of Business, Innovation & Employment,

This is a request under the Official Information Act.

MBIE administers the Holidays Act 2003. The public holidays of Good Friday and Easter Monday would seem to be calculated by reference to Easter Sunday.

Please provide me with information which explains the source of information used for the date of Easter Sunday each year. If the information is obtained from an external source, please provide a URL or other description of that source. If the information is generated from an algorithm held, used or developed by MBIE, the source code or formula for that algorithm.

Interesting response. Their description here of how the traditional date of Easter Sunday is determined in the west is not quite correct. It's not based on the actual date of the full moon, but the date of the "paschal full moon" - an approximation created by the Catholic church that doesn't necessarily line up with the actual full moon.

It's really unclear what "The dates... are confirmed by the Catholic Church" means. Does MBIE contact the Catholic church to ask for confirmation of these dates each year, for example?
