Sean Marshall made this Official Information request to Ministry of Education

The request was refused by Ministry of Education.

From: Sean Marshall

Dear Ministry of Education,

Does the ministry have any statistics on how many student representatives on school boards are elected unopposed. If so, please provide a breakdown of numbers elected unopposed vs numbers whose elections were contested for each of the past 10 years?

Yours faithfully,

Sean Marshall

Tçnâ koe Sean –

Thank you for your email of 17 August 2022 requesting information on how
many student representatives on school boards are elected unopposed. Your
request has been considered under the Official Information Act 1982 (the
Act).

As schools are self-governing, information on board election outcomes is
held individually by schools, and is not collated by the Ministry of
Education. We are therefore refusing your request under section 18(g) of
the Act, as the information requested is not held by the Ministry, and we
have no grounds for believing that the aggregated information is either
held by or more closely connected to the functions of another department
(for itself and for a departmental agency hosted by it or an
interdepartmental executive board serviced by it) or interdepartmental
venture or Minister of the Crown or organisation, or by a local authority.

You can find information on board and student representative elections at
the following links: [1]Boards of schools and kura – Education in New
Zealand and [2]School Board Elections | Student elections.

Thank you again for your email. You have the right to ask an Ombudsman to
review our decision on your request, in accordance with section 28 of the
Act. You can do this by writing to [3][email address] or to
Office of the Ombudsman, PO Box 10152, Wellington 6143.
