Information in reference to the Wellington protest

P Taylor made this Official Information request to University of Auckland

Response to this request is long overdue. By law University of Auckland should have responded by now (details and exceptions). The requester can complain to the Ombudsman.

From: P Taylor

Dear University of Auckland,

I am aware that you host the Te Pūnaha Matatini centre as part of your organisation. In accordance with the Official Information Act 1982, I would like to request all emails between Kate Hannah of Te Pūnaha Matatini and Sanjana Hattotuwa over the period 02 March 2022 to 05 March 2022 in regards to the Wellington protest of February/March 2022.

If there are more than 10 emails, the first 10 emails will be sufficient to fulfil this request to avoid rejection by invoking section 18(f) of the Act.

Yours faithfully,

P Taylor

Dear Rebecca Ewert,

1. Are you able to send an update on this request, if not the fulfilled request in it's entirety?

2. I am aware that there are still five working days until a response is due under the act, however given the recent targeting, by government funded media, of certain independently funded media personalities in New Zealand, based on the work of Kate Hannah, I would like this request to be considered an urgent request.

3. I trust the above reason (2), given in accordance with section(12)(3) of the Official Information Act 1982, will satisfy the urgency of fulfilling this request.

Yours sincerely,

P Taylor

Dear P Taylor,

I refer to your request of 2 August 2022. The University’s response
follows.

Kate Hannah was a University staff member during the period in question.
The University holds more than ten emails within the scope of your
request. The first 10 emails between Kate Hannah and Sanjana Hattotuwa
over 2 March 2022 to 5 March 2022 in relation to the Wellington protect of
February/March 2022 are withheld under the following sections of the
Official Information Act 1982 (OIA): section 9(2)(a), to protect the
privacy of natural persons; section 9(2)(g)(i), to maintain the effective
conduct of public affairs through the free and frank expression of
opinions by or between or to members of the University in the course of
their duty; and section 9(2)(g)(ii), to maintain the effective conduct of
public affairs through the protection of such members of the University
from improper pressure or harassment.

If the University had not withheld the requested documents for the reasons
set out above, we would have considered other potential reasons for
withholding those documents, including the ground in section 9(2)(ba)(i)
and (ii) to protect confidential information.

You have the right to make a complaint to an Ombudsman if you are
dissatisfied with this response.

Yours sincerely,

Landon Watt
