Govenor General
Will Maynard made this Official Information request to Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet
The request was successful.
From: Will Maynard
Dear Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet,
Does the Govenor General still have the powers to diminish parliament/prime minister if requested by the people?
I note the current Govenor General stated a while back she does not but your website bill or rights act etc states she does have the reserve powers to do so.
Yours faithfully,
Will Maynard

Kia ora Mr Will Maynard
Thank you for writing to the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet.
You have asked about the Governor-General's power to dissolve Parliament.
The Governor-General has the formal power to dissolve, prorogue (that is,
discontinue without dissolving), and summon Parliament, under section 18
of the Constitution Act. By convention, the Governor-General exercises
this power on the advice of the Prime Minister, the Governor-General's
principal adviser, as long as the government commands the confidence of
the House of Representatives and the Prime Minister maintains support as
the leader of that government.
Paragraphs [1.10], [2.6], and [6.3] of the Cabinet Manual outline the
Governor-General's power to dissolve, prorogue and summon Parliament.
Regards
Cabinet Office
