Grade distribution request
A made this Official Information request to University of Otago
This request has an unknown status. We're waiting for A to read recent responses and update the status.
From: A
Dear University of Otago,
I am making an OIA request for a spreadsheet or document containing confirmed grades of every student who took DENT462 in 2022. This need not contain further data other than the overall grades and the number of students who achieved that specific grade. I am asking for the specific grade percentage, not merely the grade letter. I can confirm I am currently in New Zealand as per section 12(1)(c) of the Act.
Yours faithfully,
A

I refer to your two information requests dated 30 June 2022 made under the
Official Information Act 1982 (Act). You have requested a grade
distribution for the DENT462 paper in Semester 1 2022. As noted to you in
our email of 4 July, we have combined your two requests together as they
asked for the same information.
Subject to the below comments, please find attached the information you
have requested.
o Semester 1 results are still subject to change as there may be special
exams outstanding. These results are accurate as at 13 July 2022.
o For privacy and student wellbeing reasons, and consistent with the
University’s standard practice, we have withheld the lowest failing
mark for the paper. Revealing this mark would provide personal
information about the lowest failing mark a student in the class could
have achieved. We therefore withhold this information pursuant to
section 9(2)(a) of the Act, and we do not consider that the reasons
for withholding this information are outweighed by other
considerations which would make it desirable in the public interest to
make the information available.
o It is the also the University’s standard practice to not report on
marks which relate to less than 5 students where we consider that such
disclosure could affect an individual’s privacy and wellbeing. Where
the numbers are very low, there is a risk that the identity of these
students could be determined/inferred, and that their personal
information (i.e. their grades) could be revealed. We note that where
the grade is Fail, where there are less than 5 students we have
indicated this using <5 – again to protect the privacy and wellbeing
of these students pursuant to section 9(2)(a) of the Act.
I trust you will find this information helpful.
We note your right to seek a review of these decisions via a complaint to
an Ombudsman. However, we would welcome the opportunity to discuss any
concerns with you first.
Ngā mihi
