Semester 1 2022 Grades

Kendyl made this Official Information request to University of Otago

The request was successful.

From: Kendyl

Dear University of Otago
I am making an OIA request for a spreadsheet or document containing confirmed grades of all students for the papers Laws 407, Laws 414, Maori 102 and Soci 305 for semester 1 2022. I am also requesting a break date of grades for the 2022 summer school paper: Tourism 101. This need not contain further data other than their overall grades.

To clarify, I am asking for the specific grade percentage, not merely the grade letter.

Yours faithfully,
K

I refer to your information request dated 1 July 2022 made under the
Official Information Act 1982. You have requested mark and grade
distributions for the LAWS407, LAWS414, MAOR102 and SOCI305 papers for
Semester 1 2022, as well as the TOUR101 paper for Summer School 2022.

We have decided to grant your request, subject to the following comments.

o Please find attached the mark distributions for LAWS414, SOCI305 and
TOUR101. We note that the mark distributions for LAWS407 and MAOR102
have not been finalised yet as there may be special examinations
outstanding and grades for some students have not been finalised. We
are not comfortable releasing the data before all grades have been
confirmed – as this many affect students’ wellbeing and disrupt
students’ performance in special examinations. We will release the
mark distributions for LAWS407 and MAOR102 once the marks have been
finalised – we anticipate that these will be finalised over the coming
weeks.

o In the attached mark distributions for LAWS414, SOCI305 and TOUR101,
we note that students who withdrew from these papers are not included
in the data.

o Given that only two students failed SOCI305 (i.e. received a grade of
FD or FE), we have determined that it is necessary to withhold the
marks and specific grades for these students to protect their privacy
and wellbeing. This is consistent with section 9(2)(a) of the Act. We
consider that withholding this information is necessary to protect
against the identity of these students being determined or inferred,
and their personal information (i.e. their marks) could be disclosed.
We consider that good reasons exist for withholding this information
and this is not outweighed by other considerations which would make it
desirable, in the public interest, to make the information available.

We will be in touch with regards to the remaining information once the
mark distributions for LAWS407 and MAOR102 have been confirmed and are
available.

If you are not satisfied with our response to your information request,
section 28(3) of the Act provides you with the right to ask an Ombudsman
to investigate and review this response. However, we would welcome the
opportunity to discuss any concerns with you first.

Thank you for your patience. Further to our email of 29 July 2022, and
subject to the following comments, please see attached the mark and grade
distributions for LAWS407 and MAOR102 for Semester 1 2022.

o Students who withdrew from the papers, or received an Aegrotat Pass
(not a mark), are excluded from the data.

o Given that only three students failed LAWS407 (i.e. received a grade
of FD or FE), we have determined that it is necessary to withhold the
marks and specific grades for these students to protect their privacy
and wellbeing. This is consistent with section 9(2)(a) of the Act. We
consider that withholding this information is necessary to protect
against the identity of these students being determined or inferred,
and their personal information (i.e. their marks) could be disclosed.

and this is not outweighed by other considerations which would make it
