Automatic Number Plate Recognition cameras
Peter Dare made this Official Information request to New Zealand Transport Agency
The request was successful.
From: Peter Dare
Dear New Zealand Transport Agency,
I wish to know the reason why NZTA has established cameras that may be used by ANPR software. I know that in my area, on SH5 there is one at the Hemo roundabout and one at Golden Springs, for example. The ostensible reason for these cameras seems to be for 'Traffic Flow' control, but what ANPR has to do with this is difficult for me to understand.
I believe that it more likely that ANPR data is used for enforcement purposes. Please let me know what arrangement NZTA has with enforcement agencies to whom the ANPR camera feeds are made available. Which agencies can access these feeds?
And in any case why is NZTA involved in these enforcement operations outside its statutory duties?
Yours faithfully,
Peter Dare
