Government support for the murder of Shireen Abu Akleh and the attack on her funeral

Mohammed Khan made this Official Information request to Nanaia Mahuta

The request was partially successful.

From: Mohammed Khan

Dear Nanaia Mahuta,

A statement was made on the @NanaiaMahuta Twitter account- https://twitter.com/NanaiaMahuta/status/... - which deliberately obscured the known facts in regards the murder of Shireen Abu Akleh- that it was a deliberate killing by zionists of the 'Israel' 'Defense Forces' terrorist group, and that the assault on her funeral by 'Israeli' 'Police' was unprovoked.

As, in a previous request that I have taken up with the Ombudsman over your failure to comply with the OIA by providing an actual summary of the documents and communications involved rather than just admitting that they exist, you declined to provide an adequate response,

I am requesting
- in electronic form
- the documents and communications which led to the production of this statement playing down the murder of Mrs. Abu Akleh and the attack against her funeral, including any emails and any other part of the sign off process.

Cheers,
Mohammed Khan

I am writing concerning your OIA request below. This email is to advise
that we will need to extend the time limit for responding to you by 20
working days, to 17 August 2022. This is because responding to your
request necessitates the review of a large quantity of information
(section 15A(1)(a) of the OIA refers).

If the response is completed before 17 August 2022, the response will be
sent to you as soon as possible.

For your information, the Chief Ombudsman has published updated guidance
on OIA requests during this time:

Tēnā koe Mohammed Khan

Thank you for your email of 21 June 2022 in which you request the
following under the Official Information Act 1982 (OIA):

A statement was made on the @NanaiaMahuta Twitter account- https://twitter.com/NanaiaMahuta/status/...
- which deliberately obscured the known facts in regards the murder of
Shireen Abu Akleh- that it was a deliberate killing by zionists of the
'Israel' 'Defense Forces' terrorist group, and that the assault on her
funeral by 'Israeli' 'Police' was unprovoked.

As, in a previous request that I have taken up with the Ombudsman over
your failure to comply with the OIA by providing an actual summary of the
documents and communications involved rather than just admitting that they
exist, you declined to provide an adequate response,

I am requesting in electronic form

- the documents and communications which led to the production of this
statement playing down the murder of Mrs. Abu Akleh and the attack against
her funeral, including any emails and any other part of the sign off
process.

On Wednesday 20 July you were informed of the need to extend the timeframe
for responding to your request for information by 20 working days, to 17
August 2022. Thank you for your patience while this process was completed.

Attached are the documents relevant to your request. Some portions of the
documents are withheld under the following sections of the OIA:

·                6(a): to avoid prejudicing the security or defence of New
Zealand or the international relations of the New Zealand Government;

·                9(2)(a): to protect individuals’ privacy;

·                9(2)(g)(i): to protect the free and frank expression of
opinions by departments;

·                9(2)(g)(ii): to protect officers and employees from
improper pressure or harassment;

Where the information has been withheld under section 9 of the OIA, no
public interest in releasing the information has been identified that
would override the reasons for withholding it.

You have the right to seek an investigation and review by the Ombudsman of
this decision by contacting [1]www.ombudsman.parliament.nz or freephone
0800 802 602.
