I refer to your information request dated 14 June 2022 made under the
Official Information Act 1982 (the Act). You have requested the grade
breakdowns (including the mean and median grades) for all 200 and 300
level POLS papers in 2021.
Subject to the comments below, please find attached the information you
have requested. Please note that there are two sheets in the attached
document (one for each paper level).
o It is the University’s standard practice to not report on marks which
relate to fewer than 5 students where we consider that such disclosure
could affect an individual’s privacy and wellbeing. Where the numbers
are very low, there is a risk that the identity of these students
could be determined/inferred, and that their personal information
(i.e. their grades) could be revealed. We therefore withhold this
information pursuant to section 9(2)(a) of the Act, and we do not
consider that the reasons for withholding this information are
outweighed by other considerations which would make it desirable in
the public interest to make the information available.
o Therefore, we note that where the grade is FAIL D or FAIL E, where
there are fewer than five students we have either grouped these
students together, or indicated using “<5” (“fewer than five”).
o Students who withdrew from the papers are excluded from the data.
I trust that this information will be helpful.
I note your right to seek a review of these decisions via a complaint to
an Ombudsman. However, we would welcome the opportunity to discuss any
concerns with you first.
Ngā mihi
