Copy of education and advice to ECan re glyphosate use on Rakaia River

David Haynes made this Official Information request to Environmental Protection Authority

The request was successful.

From: David Haynes

Dear Environmental Protection Authority,
Further to the email from Rhianna O'Connell, Compliance Officer, EPA, please provide the 'education' letter provided to ECan on the use of glyphosate, as referred to in Rhianna's email of 30 May 2022, copied as follows:

Morning again,
Apologies I should have advised that ECan were provided with education surrounding the use of glyphosate. The advice letter that was sent has been cancelled due to lack of evidential sufficiency to confirm a breach of the Hazardous Substances Act 1996.

I have quickly checked with my manager, and she has advised that we’ll need to follow the OIA process before providing you with a copy of the final letter sent to ECan so I’ll take your email and forward this to our team to ensure any necessary redactions are made.

Thanks again,

Rhianna O’Connell (she/her)
Compliance Officer
Compliance, Monitoring and Enforcement
Ph: 04 474 5564

This is in the context of their spraying glyphosate on to the Rakaia River bed as part of the annual weed maintenance programme.

Yours faithfully,

David Haynes
