The following complaint has been sent to the Ombudsman:

**************************************
Tena koe,

I wish to make a complaint over the refusal to supply information requested under the Official Information Act 1982.

I requested a copy of the NZ Properties (Government Only) dataset referred to in the recent property data services survey (closing 20 May 2022) from Land Information New Zealand.

I am deeply concerned at the principle that this refusal sets. Public access to land information is a fundamental element of the New Zealand land records systems. Since 1870, public access to the land register has been firmly based upon a publicly available record; the land register.

According to the letter refusing to supply the information, the data is based upon a combination of local and central government information. Local government information relating to land is also supposed to be publicly available.

Since the early 2000s, Land Information New Zealand has effectively controlled access to the land register by charging fees. However, the refusal to supply the presently requested information is evidently a blanket refusal without any option of paying a fee to view the data.
