Dear Statistics New Zealand

I would like your best estimate of the number of people who were aged 18-21 as a 1 Jan 2022 (i.e. born in the years 2000 - 2003 inclusive) by their New Zealand region of residence (e.g. Auckland).

Thank you

Kia ora Emily,

Thank you for your Official Information Act request for relating to 2022
population estimates.

Unfortunately, we do not publish data using a 18-21 year group (our age
groups are normally 5 years) and our most recent subnational estimates are
as at 30 June 2021. If the current estimates (30 June 2021) are still
suitable for you, we would be able to create a customised job to extract
data for the 18-21 year group as per your request.

There would be a charge for this information ($155 + GST per hour, minimum
2 hour charge) as Stats NZ operates on “cost recovery” basis  – you pay
for the time it takes to extract and supply the information. This is
allowed for under the guidelines for an OIA. The Ministry of Justice
provides [1]charging guidelines for OIAs.

Stats NZ is funded by government to collect then publish a wide range of
statistics. The funding is a fixed amount each year and we publish
statistics to meet the needs of a wide a range of customer groups as
possible. We are not funded to produce statistics for single
individuals/businesses/groups, but offer a chargeable service to meet the
demand for those willing to pay.

We do endeavour to publish as many statistics that will be useful – again
within the funding we get.

In terms of our already-published data, we do have [2]national population
estimates by single years of age as at 31 December 2021, as well as
[3]regional estimates across all ages as at 30 June 2021, which can then
be used to find out the proportion of the population that lives in each
region (attached .xlsx file). From there you could then work out a rough
estimate of the 18-21 year group as at 30 June 2021.

If you have any further questions, or would like for us to create a
customised job for your request, please let me know.

Ngâ mihi,

Thank you for your reply, and the information you have provided. Using your data (and other tools available online), I have produced my own estimate of the NZ population aged 20-24 as at 30 June 2021 by region. I have added these below. If you have any information at hand that would make these estimates more accurate, I would be grateful for your assistance.

Thanks
Emily

Waikato - 35,400
Bay of Plenty - 13,700

Hi Emily,

I just have a couple of questions for clarification:

1. You said these calculations are for the 20-24 age group - we do already have the estimates for this age band published here (https://nzdotstat.stats.govt.nz/wbos/Ind...), so if this group is the age band you actually want to calculate, I would suggest using the estimates we have produced already. It is only if you want the 18-21 age band (as per your original request) that we don't have published data for.
2. In saying this, the table above is based on national estimates as at June 2021, which I know does not cover the original period you requested (as at Dec 2021), so if you need this then you would need to use the proportions I sent you to calculate a more 'updated' estimate from this table: http://infoshare.stats.govt.nz/ViewTable...

Sorry if I'm repeating myself a bit here from my last email or if this is already what you have done, I was just confused as to what period and age group your estimates were from. Regardless of period/age, the assumptions that the national Dec 2021 estimates are based on would be the most 'accurate' for estimates that I am aware of.

I hope this helps - if you need any further assistance let me know.

Hi Cat

That's exactly what I needed to be pointed to - thank you very much!

(Apologies about the definitions changing slightly... I pivoted when I saw what information was and wasn't available.)

Have a great weekend.
