Dear Mr Robinson

The automatically-generated acknowledgement email you have received upon logging your request appears in both te reo Māori and English. Unfortunately it appears that the formatting of this is affected when published on the FYI website, so the lines appear mixed up. For your information, the English text should read as follows:

'Thank you for your email to the Ministry of Education.

This is an auto generated response confirming your email has been received. Please do not respond to this message.

We will respond to your email as soon as possible.'

Tēnā koe Lee

Thank you for your email of 11 March 2022 to the Ministry of Education
requesting the following information:

 a. The total amount the Ministry of Education as a whole spends yearly on
food catering for all events, including offsite events
 b. A breakdown of information in (a) by region and sector
 c. The total amount the Ministry of Education spends yearly on cars,
petrol and associated costs including Fleetwise costs
 d. A breakdown of (c) by region and sector
 e. The total amount the Ministry of Education spends yearly on travel,
taxis and accommodation of its staff
 f. A breakdown of (d) by region and sector

Your request has been considered under the Official Information Act 1982
(the Act).

We regularly report our yearly expenditure through the Annual Review. You
will be able to find our 2020/21 Annual Review answers, and previous
years’ answers, at the following links:

o 2020/21 Annual Review:
[1]https://www.parliament.nz/resource/en-NZ...
o Previous years’ Annual Reviews:
[2]https://www.parliament.nz/en/site-search...

Regarding Questions a and b, we do not separately record costs as
‘catering’. In many cases, invoices that include catering costs will also
include other costs such as venue hire. For this reason, it is not
possible to report on catering costs in isolation. This is also reflected
in our Annual Review answers.

To produce the information requested in Questions a and b would require us
to consider individually each invoice per event that might include
catering costs. Therefore, we must refuse these parts of your request
under section 18(f) of the Act, as the information requested cannot be
made available without substantial collation or research.

In response to Question c, I direct you to pages; 34, 35, 115, 126, and
224 to 241 of the 2020/21 Annual Review.

We are unable to break our costs down further in the way which you have
requested in Question d, due to the way in which this information is
recorded. Therefore, we must refuse this part of your request under
section 18(f) of the Act, as the information requested cannot be made
available without substantial collation or research.

In response to Question e, I refer you to the section of the 2020/21
Annual Review titled Training, Travel and Other Expenses beginning on page
112, and pages 355 to 416.

We are unable to break our costs down further in the way which you have
requested in Question f, due to the way in which this information is
recorded. Therefore, we must refuse this part of your request under
section 18(f) of the Act, as the information requested cannot be made
available without substantial collation or research.

Please note, the Ministry now proactively publishes OIA responses on our
website. As such, we may publish this response on our website after five
working days. Your name and contact details will be removed.

Thank you again for your email. You have the right to ask an Ombudsman to
review this decision. You can do this by writing to
[3][email address] or Office of the Ombudsman, PO Box 10152,
Wellington 6143.
