From: Nikki Supinya Dejnoprat

Dear University of Otago,

Could you please provide the following information on entry into BDS through the "alternative category".

1. What was the 2021 lowest successful UCATANZ score for the alternative category applicants for the BDS programme ("2021" refers to the applicants submitting their application in 2021 and starting their degree in 2022)

2. How many people have applied and received an interview offer in the alternative category for dentistry at Otago in 2021 (these are students starting their degree in 2022)?

3. How many alternative category applicants have been accepted into the dental programme in 2021?

4. For the alternative category applicants who passed the interview threshold, is the GPA weighted in the selection process of applicants who receive an offer into the dental programme? Or only UCATANZ score and the interview are weighted?

5. What was the UCAT cutoff for 2022 alternative category applicants

Yours faithfully,

Supinya Dejnoprat

Kia ora Supinya

I refer to your Official Information Act request dated 1 February 2022.
You have requested information regarding entry to the 2022 Bachelor of
Dental Surgery (BDS) programme via the Alternative category.

Please see our responses to each of your questions below.

What was the 2021 lowest successful UCATANZ score for the alternative
category applicants for the BDS programme (“2021” refers to the applicants
submitting their application in 2021 and starting their degree in 2022)

For entry to the 2022 BDS programme, UCAT thresholds were not applied to
the Alternative category of admission, therefore there is no lowest
successful UCAT score for applicants to the 2022 BDS programme via the
Alternative category.

How many people have applied and received an interview offer in the
alternative category for dentistry at Otago in 2021 (these are students
starting their degree in 2022)

8 applicants to the 2022 BDS programme via the Alternative category were
invited to interview.

How many alternative category applicants have been accepted into the
dental programme in 2021?

5 applicants to the 2022 BDS programme via the Alternative category
accepted offers to enter to the programme.

For the alternative category applicants who passed the interview
threshold, is the GPA weighted in the selection process of applicants who
receive an offer into the dental programme? Or only UCATANZ score and the
interview are weighted?

The selection of applicants who meet the criteria to be considered for
entry to the BDS programme via the Alternative category is based on
academic merit and an interview. Application for entry to the BDS
programme via the Alternative category requires the submission of a
personal statement, CV, and academic record. These are used by the Dental
Admissions Committee to select whether an applicant is offered an
interview. Once an interview score is calculated it is considered
alongside the remainder of the applicant’s application to determine
whether the applicant will receive an offer for entry to the programme.

Further information regarding entry to the University of Otago’s BDS
programme via the Alternative category can be found at the [1]Guidelines
for Admission or [2]Regulations for the Degree of Bachelor of Dental
Surgery (BDS).

What was the UCAT cutoff for 2022 alternative category applicants?

As noted above, for entry to the 2022 BDS programme, UCAT thresholds were
not applied to the Alternative category of admission.

UCAT thresholds for entry to the BDS programme are set annually by the
Dental Admissions Committee. The UCAT threshold for entry to the 2023 BDS
programme (applying in 2022) is expected to be set in September 2022.

We trust you will find this information helpful.

Ngâ mihi

Kelsey
