Shuttle bus services

Mat Barrie made this Official Information request to Auckland Transport

The request was successful.

From: Mat Barrie

Dear Auckland Transport,

Regarding the staff only shuttle bus service provided by Auckland Transport for staff use between the Henderson and Britomart train stations.

1. Were the following specific alternative options considered, and if not, why not? If they were, why were they considered inadequate for meeting staff transport requirements?

1a) Subsidising AT staff use of existing services between Henderson and Britomart for work purposes?
1b) Increasing the frequency of scheduled services between Henderson and Britomart (specifically the 090, which is the most direct route) and subsidising staff use for work purposes?
1c) Introducing a Henderson to Britomart non-stop service (bus or train) for general commuter use and subsidising AT staff use for work purposes?
1d) Providing 3G enabled laptops for staff use and subsidising staff use of existing train or bus services for work purposes with the expectation that staff can work remotely via VPN or other remote options while commuting?
1e) Wifi-enabling existing services (train or bus) between Henderson and Britomart (at the least) and operating them either free or on a cost-recovery basis to commuters, and free for AT staff to use for work purposes?

2. What other options were considered (if any) and for what reason were they considered inadequate? Please be as specific as possible regarding reasoning.

Yours faithfully,

Mat Barrie

Dear Mr Barrie

Thank you for your email regarding the Auckland Transport (AT) Shuttle Bus
Service.  The responses to all your enquiries are as follows;

1a) Subsidising AT staff use of existing services between Henderson and
Britomart for work purposes?

Yes, AT has HOP cards which are made available to staff for work related
travel between Henderson and Britomart.

1b) Increasing the frequency of scheduled services between Henderson and
Britomart (specifically the 090, which is the most direct route) and
subsidising staff use for work purposes?

AT is currently reviewing its public transport network. The West Auckland
consultation is due to occur in 2014. Additional information on the new
public transport network project can be found on the Auckland Transport
website.

1c) Introducing a Henderson to Britomart non-stop service (bus or train)
for general commuter use and subsidising AT staff use for work purposes?

This could be something considered under the above project, however, it
would be unlikely a direct bus service would occur between Henderson,
particularly outside of peak, as this would work against the connected
network principle.

With regard to rail, the frequency of the service means that it is
impractical to run a direct rail service as the direct service would catch
up to the prior service. Rail service times from Henderson will reduce
slightly with the introduction of the EMU’s next year and will
significantly reduce again with the introduction of the City Rail Link

1d) Providing 3G enabled laptops for staff use and subsidising staff use
of existing train or bus services for work purposes with the expectation
that staff can work remotely via VPN or other remote options while
commuting?

Many AT staff have access to laptops which enable VPN connections via
Wi-Fi. As existing desktop hardware reaches the end of its life, the
decision on its replacement considers the users requirement to have a
mobile or fixed hardware.

1e) Wi-Fi-enabling existing services (train or bus) between Henderson and
Britomart (at the least) and operating them either free or on a
cost-recovery basis to commuters, and free for AT staff to use for work
purposes?

AT introduced Wi-Fi at train stations in May and will be expanding this to
ferry terminals and bus station,

Wi-Fi on-board trains, buses and ferries is also being reviewed as a
possibility in the future dependant on technology.

2. What other options were considered (if any) and for what reason were
they considered inadequate?  Please be as specific as possible regarding
reasoning.

AT offers numerous other options for staff travel these include, Public
Transport passes (HOP Cards) Fleet Vehicles including Push bikes and Taxi
Vouchers. All of these options are available from the Henderson and CBD
offices. In addition, staff are encouraged to use no travel options such
as conference calling when appropriate.

I trust the above provides you with the information you require.

Kind Regards

Tracey
