Continued funding of Acupuncture and Chiropractic

Kevin McCready made this Official Information request to Accident Compensation Corporation

The request was partially successful.

From: Kevin McCready

Dear Accident Compensation Corporation,

I write following your OIA response of 11Feb2014 to Mr D Lohr. In that response you said Acupuncture and Chiropractic are funded by ACC as supplementaty to "normal medical management", and you said "not all modalities" of Acupuncture and Chiropractic are funded by ACC.

Can you please tell me:
1. what Acupuncture and Chiropractic "modalities" are funded and how these have been arrived at and other Acupuncture and Chiropractic modalities excluded?
2. upon what scientific evidence you continue to fund the modalities you fund?
3. who are the experts on Acupuncture and Chiropractic that you consult for assessment of this scientific evidence.

I am happy to be guided by you to consider modifying this request if necessary.

Yours faithfully,

Kevin McCready

The response was inadequate and I will submit another. In particular, the response did not address chiropractry at all.

A previous OIA request (https://fyi.org.nz/request/881-list-of-a...) received this as part of its response:

"With respect to processes and requirements for measuring effectiveness, Treatment Profiles have been developed for 150 common injury types. Treatment Profiles are guides to the treatment and rehabilitation services ACC expects a practitioner to provide to a client for a particular injury. They describe current 'good practice' and what outcomes should be achieved."

However, the ACC's Acupuncture Treatment Profiles document (http://www.acc.co.nz/PRD_EXT_CSMP/groups...) contains *many* more injuries than just those described as being supported by evidence in the response to this request.
