Dear Callum,

I refer to your request of 4 November 2021. The University’s response
follows.

The information requested in parts 1-6 of your request is set out in the
table below, with the exception of 2022 data not held by the University of
Auckland as at the date of your request. Your request for 2022 data is
refused under section 18(g) of the Official Information Act.

UoA MBChB Part II OIA data (as at 4 Category 1 Category 2 2019 2020 2021
November 2021)
Applicants First Year General 336 234 403
Applicants Graduate General 222 217 283
Interview GPA cut-off First Year General 7.25 8.1 7.2

*For Graduate applicants who have no outstanding grades at the time of
shortlisting.

“How the GPA cut-off for MBChB interview offers for both the First Year
and Postgraduate General pathways is determined”

GPA cut-offs for MBChB interview offers are set so that approximately
twice the number of applicants as places available are interviewed. This
results in GPA interview cut-offs varying from year to year.

As stated on the University’s website:

o All applicants in the General Admissions category who have a
calculated GPA of 6.0 or higher are considered for interview.
o For graduate applicants who complete degrees in the minimum academic
time, all years of study are weighted equally in calculating the
qualifying GPA
o For both First Year and graduate applicants, where semester 2 grades
required for calculation are not yet available, the GPA is calculated
using the best possible GPA for that semester (9 in all papers).

“8. The number of General places available in the MBChB for the 2019-2022
cohorts and if there are any numbers of seats allocated specifically to
First Year/Postgraduate applicants”

The numbers of available seats for domestic programme total, MAPAS, RRAS,
UTAS, are as specified in the Programme and course limitations
([1]https://www.staff.auckland.ac.nz/en/teac...).
The number of available seats for General category (First
Year/Postgraduate) is domestic programme total with MAPAS, RRAS, and UTAS,
numbers deducted – as per the table below.

UoA MBChB Part II Category 1 Category 2 2019 2020 2021
Available Seats - based on programme Domestic General 120 120 120
limitations

“9. If there are no numbers allocated to First Year/Postgraduate
applicants how the applicants from the separate pathways are compared”

Seats are allocated to First Year/Postgraduate applicants via the General
Category, as per the information provided above.

Yours sincerely,

Dear Rebecca Ewert,

Thank you for your reply. I will request the 2022 when the interview process has concluded and the data is available.

With regards to points 8 and 9, I'm sorry that I was unclear in my initial request. My intended question was - Of the 120 General places available is there a specific proportion of the seats allocated to First Year applicants and a specific proportion allocated to Postgraduate applicants or are they all considered as part of the same pool? If it is the latter, how are the two compared in the final selection process? (Given that their GPAs are not equivalent)

Yours sincerely,

Callum Chalmers

Dear Callum,

FY and Graduates fall into General admissions category – there are no
places specifically allocated to FY applicants or Grad applicants. The
explanation about how rankings are calculated in the General admissions
category is as follows.

As stated on the University’s website
([1]https://www.auckland.ac.nz/en/study/stud...),
for final selection, applicants will be offered admission to the MBChB
Part II programme according to the rank order until the available places
in the category are filled. Interviewed applicants’ final ranking is based
on a weighting of the following components (but note that selection
criteria may change from year to year):

o GPA for four core courses (FY)/ Cumulative GPA from qualifying
programme: 60%
o [2]UCAT ANZ Final Score: 15%
o Multi Mini Interview: 25%

The specific formula for calculating an applicant’s ranking score in the
general category is as follows:

{(applicant's GPA-mean GPA)/Std Dev GPA} X 0.6 +

{(applicant's MMI score-mean MMI score)/ Std Dev MMI score} X 0.25 +

{(applicant's average UCAT score-mean average UCAT score)/ Std Dev average
UCAT score} X 0.15

Mean and standard deviation are calculated from the scores for each
category. In the General admissions category, FY mean and standard
deviation are calculated independently of Grad mean and standard
deviation. This ensures that both FY and Grad applicants are evaluated
fairly.

Yours sincerely,

Rebecca Ewert

Dear Rebecca Ewert,

Thanks so much, that makes sense! Are you able to share the General 'ranking score' cutoff for offers for the 2019-2021 cohorts?

Also now that the 2022 interview round has concluded is the 2022 data on applicants, interview offers and cutoffs now available? If not, do you have a rough estimate of when it will be available?

Yours sincerely,

Callum Chalmers
