Dear Mr Huang,

I refer to your request of 23 September 2021. Unfortunately, consultations
necessary to make a decision on your request are such that a proper
response cannot reasonably be made within the original time limit.
Accordingly, the University has extended the time limit for your request
until 4 November 2021 under section 15A of the Official Information Act.
This is the new maximum time limit for the University’s response; we will
respond to your request as soon as reasonably practicable.

You have the right to make a complaint to an Ombudsman if you are
dissatisfied with this extension.

Yours sincerely,
Landon Watt

Dear Mr Huang,

I refer to your request of 23 September 2021. The requested information is
attached, except for the ethnicity breakdown of exam grades and mean
numerical marks. The University cannot provide a breakdown of final exam
grades by ethnicity without substantial collation or research due to the
nature of our records systems. As this is due to the nature of the
University’s records systems, neither consulting with you, extending the
time limit, or imposing a charge would allow this part of your request to
be granted. Accordingly, the University has refused this part of your
request under section 18(f) of the Official Information Act. As the
University does not hold a breakdown of mean numerical marks by ethnicity,
this part of your request has been refused under section 18(g) of the
Official Information Act.

Details of attached documents

Attachment 1 – BUSINESS 101 Canvas Grade Book Summary (not final grades)
2018 - 2020

Grade distribution (raw total result for coursework plus examination);
Examination grade distribution (raw examination result); Mean raw result
for S1/18, S2/18, S1/19, S2/19, and S1/20.

o This data is sourced from CANVAS by teaching term and provides the
grade distribution for the examination and the overall grade
(coursework plus examination), numerical mean grade for the course,
before any adjustments.
o The data cannot be filtered by ethnicity as this field is not
available to instructors at the course level.
o These raw results will not reflect any changes to grades that were
made to grades before they were released as official results to
students to Student Services Online. For example, in some semesters
there may have been a requirement for students to pass the examination
to be eligible to pass the course, DNS (Did Not Sit) may replace
initially reported D grades in instances where the student did not sit
the examination, the grade bump in Semester 1 2020 etc.

Attachment 2 – BUSINESS 101 Final Grades SSO: S1, 2018 – S2,2020

Final Grade Data - Final grade distribution by ethnicity for S1/18, S2/18,
S1/19, S2/19, and S1/20.

o This data is sourced from Student Services Online and provides data
based on the final grade result for a course that is entered onto a
Student’s Academic Transcript. While this data is filtered by
ethnicity, it does not provide the information required to report on
the results achieved by students in only the examination component of
the course.
o These are official results. These will not necessarily match the raw
grades in CANVAS as they can be modified through aegrotat processes, a
requirement for students to pass the examination to be eligible to
pass the course, replacement of an initially reported D grade with a
DNS (Did Not Sit) in instances where the student did not sit the
examination, a grade bump such as occurred in Semester 1 2020 as part
of the University’s initial response to COVID-19 .

You have the right to make a complaint to an Ombudsman if you are
dissatisfied with this response.

Yours sincerely
