Matthew Hooton made this Official Information request to Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet

The request was partially successful.

From: Matthew Hooton

Dear Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet,

Under the OIA, please provide me with information held by DPMC on how many ICU beds there were in New Zealand on 1 January 2020, how many there were on 1 July 2021, how many there were on 1 August 2021, and what steps DPMC took to help achieve the assumed improvement in these numbers to make New Zealand able to cater for more people requiring ICU care.

Yours faithfully,

Matthew Hooton

Dear Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet,

Thank you for your quick acknowledgement.

Please note that by "beds" I mean this term in two senses, namely:

1) the actual bed and the supporting equipment to provide ICU care; and

2) the number of "beds" being used or immediately available for use in New Zealand by people needing ICU services, taking into account available staffing.

Thank you.

Yours sincerely

Matthew Hooton

I'm also interested to determine the numbers as requested. According to my calculations, based on 2 September case data from the COVID-19 govt website, the August outbreak will require 6 ICU beds and 70 hospitalizations.

It seems like the Ministry of Health has recently published ICU capacity data on their website:

https://www.health.govt.nz/our-work/dise...

"In February 2021, the Ministry completed a stocktake of ICU capacity in DHBs. The capacity at that time was 284 beds, and this is still the current estimate."
